The
Tennebrae ( service of darkness) is an historic observation of the death of
Jesus Christ. The gradual darkening of the sanctuary signifies the darkness
that covered the earth at the time of Jesus' suffering and death on the
cross. The focus of our service is the words that Jesus spoke during his
crucifixion. A set of seven candles are lit together and extinguished one by
one for each time that Jesus spoke. Parts of this service date back to the
